The path to an international education at Wonderland Academy

At Wonderland Academy, we opened a new GCSE program this school year for gifted and motivated upper-grade students. It's an important step in the further development of our school's academic focus and also a unique opportunity for kids who want to study in depth, improve their English, and prepare for a future in an international environment.

What is the GCSE program?

The GCSE program is based on an international educational model common in the UK and other English-speaking countries. At Wonderland Academy, it is designed to develop advanced academic skills, critical thinking, independence, and high language proficiency in students, all in full accordance with the Czech Framework Education Program for Primary Education.

The teaching is done entirely in English and builds on the regular school program. It opens up the possibility for students to take international GCSE exams at the end of their primary school years.

The program is designed for students in grades 6–9 who want to develop their English, academic skills, and get ready for further study in a more demanding and internationally focused environment. Classes are held in small groups of up to 10 students, which allows for personalized attention, regular feedback, and systematic support for each student.

The program also includes weekly plans and regular monthly progress summaries.

Who is the program for?

Subjects in the first year of study

Each year, students choose a combination of four subjects. For 6th graders, we have prepared this selection:

Advanced English
Academic English, working with text, developing vocabulary, and essay writing.

Integrated Science
Connecting biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science into a broader context.

Integrated Humanities
Literature, culture, and global topics that develop understanding of the world and the ability to argue.

Personal Development
Personal development, working with motivation, presentation skills, and building healthy self-confidence.

The individual focuses change in the following years so that they build on each other and allow students to gradually develop their knowledge and skills more deeply. The range of subjects in the first year and the basic structure of the program also match the information from the school's presentation materials.

Program scope

The program includes 4 extra hours per week. The teaching is led by qualified teachers and takes place in small groups, which encourage active student participation, discussion, independent work, and the development of presentation skills.

Entry requirements

Students who meet these criteria are accepted into the program:

  • excellent academic results in 5th grade
  • English language level at least B1
  • recommendation from the class teacher and the English teacher
  • motivational interview with the child and parents

What is the evaluation like?

The evaluation is given in percentages and is converted into a traditional grade on the report card. The final assessment includes:

  • tests
  • essays
  • projects
  • presentations and discussion
  • ongoing work during class

Every month, students and parents get a detailed progress report, which summarizes their academic progress, language skills, and personal development.
